The cousins loved their costumes and had a ton of fun being recognized in their costumes, everyone seemed to know who they were right off the bat. which was great. I'm thinking paper mache stormtroopers next year! haha....kidding.

Paper-mache Proton packs from Ghostbusters, a 'fun' project for a Halloween Costume for my little cousins this year. I found a few templates for full sized packs online and went to work. cardboard, a few plastic parts i found around the house and loads of newspaper. I had to make two in different scales because the boys are different ages, this in-progress is from the second smaller pack.

I truly can't express in words how exciting, magical, and stessful Comic-Con International can be. Back from the convention and boy are my arms tired. Lots to do! Big plans to set in motion and plenty to finish up. I have to say this was the most hectic and crowded I have ever seen the convention and that's saying alot. It was great seeing everyone this year and meeting some new faces.

I now need to get some work done, it's made me realize how much of a slacker I've been.

I gotta say firstly, I don't really keep up with what's going on in the world of comics in the up to date manner. In fact most of my ideal superheros range from the characters origins or reinventions at some later date. I'm sure this is how most people want to 'recreate' their favorite superheros ..to match whatever image they have in their mind whether it's been realized before by some past artist/writer or if it is some dream they have in mind for that specific character. For me it's all basics, no convolution, no soap opera drama ( well perhaps a little ) Captain Ameerica is a soldier that fights for his country, the Hulk is a gamma irradiated genius that smashes. Thor..is a ....thundergod...that ..uhh..saves folk? anyway Doctor Strange I think I'd like to work with the most, Master of Mystic Arts. What would be YOUR Ideal comic character to draw/write?

So here's the killinest school around, St. Hell's School of Smackdown. Starring Nun Yerbizness ( Created by Kristen McCabe ), Chop-Louie ( Created by Dave Johnson ) and the Chef O' Death... by me! Josh Hughes...my first Fist-A-Cuffs entry, but hopefully not the last. It's a blast to see how people react to your characters and who would win in a fight. We did pretty well considering the competition.

The Chef is a mix of Mad Max and Iron Chef... In a Post-Apocalyptical world where only the strongest dish survives.

The Tin Woodsman from Oz is a dark and weird character. I haven't read the books since I was young, so I've forgotten the fact that he has in fact the darkest kids book character origin I've ever known.

"There was one of the Munchkin girls who was so beautiful that I soon grew to love her with all my heart. She, on her part, promised to marry me as soon as I could earn enough money to build a better house for her; so I set to work harder than ever. But the girl lived with an old woman who did not want her to marry anyone, for she was so lazy she wished the girl to remain with her and do the cooking and the housework. So the old woman went to the Wicked Witch of the East, and promised her two sheep and a cow if she would prevent the marriage. Thereupon the Wicked Witch enchanted my axe, and when I was chopping away at my best one day, for I was anxious to get the new house and my wife as soon as possible, the axe slipped all at once and cut off my left leg.
"This at first seemed a great misfortune, for I knew a one-legged man could not do very well as a wood-chopper. So I went to a tinsmith and had him make me a new leg out of tin. The leg worked very well, once I was used to it. But my action angered the Wicked Witch of the East, for she had promised the old woman I should not marry the pretty Munchkin girl. When I began chopping again, my axe slipped and cut off my right leg. Again I went to the tinsmith, and again he made me a leg out of tin. After this the enchanted axe cut off my arms, one after the other; but, nothing daunted, I had them replaced with tin ones. The Wicked Witch then made the axe slip and cut off my head, and at first I thought that was the end of me. But the tinsmith happened to come along, and he made me a new head out of tin.
"I thought I had beaten the Wicked Witch then, and I worked harder than ever; but I little knew how cruel my enemy could be. She thought of a new way to kill my love for the beautiful Munchkin maiden, and made my axe slip again, so that it cut right through my body, splitting me into two halves. Once more the tinsmith came to my help and made me a body of tin, fastening my tin arms and legs and head to it, by means of joints, so that I could move around as well as ever. But, alas! I had now no heart, so that I lost all my love for the Munchkin girl, and did not care whether I married her or not. I suppose she is still living with the old woman, waiting for me to come after her.

I don't know if you guys can tell but I have been using col-erase pencils lately and LOVING them. These things give the great illusion that my art rocks. At first the reds and blues were all i dealt with, but recently I've delved deeper into the box and used the brown and purple and green!

Now don't get me wrong it's not that I want to do it full time... But I'd love to work on some of the prop work or ride designs, it's like movie set work but in a more permanent setting.

Mike Wieringo, 44 has died.

A loss for all the Drawingboard.org members. He was Warm and sincere with every
post he made. A true professional but still connected with artists of all walks of life.
This is a shock for everyone, it's something that came out of the blue. My heart goes

The Clubhouse has a sculpting jam every month and for the most part I come up with an idea, but never participate. This last jam's theme was Zombies...so i couldn't pass THAT up!

For some reason I couldn't get the gory side to come out right ...kept blurring...Leaves more to the imagination i guess.

It's Super Sculpey on a wire armature and painted with acrylic paints with some gloss varnish for goo effect.

Here are some more One-Two Punch sketches...more randomness from the first story. Also a few ideas from after the book trying to keep the characters fresh.

I find that these guys tend to have a life of their own, when i put in a background first they tend to pick where they want to be in it. Also their expressions are indicative of their personality.

that may seem odd to some of you , but anyone that has a character probably understands after a few years of drawing that character they come to life.

In 2004 I was apart of a collabrative effort to produce a Anthology series with some of the best artists I've ever had the pleasure to know. Unfortunately things didn't work out in the end and it fell flat. However some of the coolest characters, art and stories came from it.

My story revolves around two Robot brothers: One, and Two. The story is called ONE-TWO Punch and is set in a Medieval/Fantasy setting. It's wacky, slapstick and overwhelming cute at times.

I plan to showcase the original story here, plus production sketches an random ideas.

The Doodle i did before starting the sculpture, somewhere in my head this guy came to the surface and it came to fruition as a sculpture. I think I need to do more personal projects, so how do I get paid that way? Anybody?

A few days ago I read on the Clubhouse forum about using a saw blade for a rake tool and man I had an old sawblade in the junk drawer. So i grabbed an exactoknife handle bent thesaw blade in a few spots and BAM! Instant rake tool for me.

So here I'm using the rake tool on the Dragon's neck area to rough it up. Next I bake the whole thing once again , once it's cooled I add more Super Sculpey to the neck. I flesh it out and smooth it.
then after that I 'Draw' the scales in with a needle type tool. It's the pointy light handled one on the tool pic.

After that i try and give the scales some depth. By pressing in a kemper spoon tool in the front of each scale and leaving the rear it gives it that overlapped look and feel. After I hit that with a heat gun I toss it in the oven again and when it cools i clean up the scales . This is usually sanding with multiple grit papers...then using an exacto for any excess that's not cool scale details.

I mostly use Super Sculpey, it's available in most Arts& Crafts stores and it's relatively cheaper than Waxes or Other Clays. Plus I LOVE it, it takes a little while and you can master it.Ok since I put this together for my action figure a few years back I'll use it.

I normally start with a loose sketch of the sculpt. It usually evolves greatly once you have the clay in your hands.

Then you make an armature , basically a skeletal support for the sculpture. I use a copper wire , but you could use a coathanger or any wire without plastic on it. Nothing too flexible though it has to support your sculpture , so the larger the figure the larger the gauge of wire should be.

here i have two wires that i merge on the 'spine' with a thinner wire. You have to think of the structure of your character. If it has 4 legs then design the skeleton to reflect that.

Next i rough in some clay once the armature is together and posed. this would be the same as doing basic shapes in a drawing. This stage can be a bit sloppy so don't worry if it's not coming out exactly as you want it. You can continue to refine as you go along. SS is great in that it does not air dry, it has to be exposed to heat to cure.

You may add details at this point, I like to do a pre-bake at around 250 degrees in my oven on a tin pan for about 15 minutes. Again depending on the thickness of your character, because small stuff will tend to burn of not monitored. Glass is ok too, just make sure it's not something you'll be eating off of in the future! Pre-bakes are good to make sure your sculpt doesn't crack because the center is fully cooked. That is dependant on the thickness of your sculpture. the thicker it is the more prebakes i recommend.
with alot of work and patience you get closer to what you desire your sculpt to look like. More to come!

I've always wanted to make a game, so i guess this is where i need to start. Flash is something that i think i can handle the coding. Actionscript isn't my strong point but it's time to learn ehh?
